Calgary, AB – July 22nd: Award-winning independent developer New World Interactive announced the hiring of BioWare veteran Michael Grills to a recently added Art Director role as the company expands its Canadian development studio, New World North in Calgary, Alberta.
Michael has a long and varied career contributing to over 20 shipped games across multiple genres from indie to AAA, including; Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, NeverWinter Nights, Jade Empire & Virtual Villagers.
In addition to art and creative direction, he brings extensive experience in UI / UX, Concept Art, Illustration, Story-boarding, level art, and branding.
Michael is the second local Calgarian to join the newly formed studio New World North, and an active member of the local community with numerous public art installations around Calgary, as well as freelance work for clients such as Honda, Google and Sirius XM.
His new role will primarily focus on an as-yet unannounced new IP being developed by New World in the city, which is rapidly evolving as Canada’s newest gaming hub.

New World Interactive, headquartered in Denver, CO, is best known for their ‘Insurgency’ franchise of immersive, tactical, first person shooters, which combined have sold over 7 million units on PC. The franchise’s latest iteration “Insurgency: Sandstorm” (due to launch on consoles in the future) received critical acclaim upon PC launch, and the company looks to build upon this success and explore new IP’s as it scales up its new Canadian production studio.
The 36-strong indie team is looking to boost their headcount by up to 15 by the end of the year.
